The coins, found under an old tree, date from between 1847 and 1894, and are "uncirculated" and in "mint condition" according to David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which authenticated the trove.
While the face value of the coins is only around $27,000 (£16,200), some of the hoard are so rare that they could fetch nearly $1 million (£600,000) apiece at auction according to NBC News
The couple have tried to keep their anonymous to prevent a modern-day gold rush.
