Five people survived when a crowded boat conveying about 24 passengers capsized in Festac Town, Lagos, on Tuesday, rescue officials told sunnewsonline.com.
Thirteen people lost their lives in the accident which occurred at about 7.45 p.m.
Six bodies were still missing as divers are frantically searching the depths of the dark, murky river for the recovery of more corpses.
Most of the corpses recovered had been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
“We got the alert late,” said Ibrahim Farinloye, South-West spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, who noted that they received a distress alert at 11.10 p.m.
“But fortunately, the locals assisted by recovering about 13 bodies. 11 males and two females, including a girl of less than 10 years,” Mr. Farinloye added.
Residents say that the boat, which ferries people from 4th Avenue to the nearby 6th Avenue, a distance of less than a 50 metres across the water, has a capacity for 17 passengers.
But on the ill-fated trip, the boat was bearing 24 passengers some of them youth allegedly on their way to watch a match at a football viewing centre at 41 Road, 4th Avenue.
